Saturn Opposite Uranus April 2010
Saturn is opposite Uranus on 26 April 2010, the fourth of five of these oppositions over a 20 month period. These oppositions are having a marked effect on the world as we have seen with the big changes in economic structures and politics. Americas first black president, Barack Obama was elected on the same day as the first opposition, and the worlds first openly lesbian head of state, Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir was elected prime minister of Iceland 4 days before the second opposition.
But what does this mean for us individually, how is it making is feel? It really is a tug of war because Saturn and Uranus represent opposite principles in astrology, and they are opposite now in aspect. Saturn is our sense of security and stability, it rules tradition, discipline, responsibility and limitation. Uranus is our sense of freedom and individuality, it rules revolution, invention, uncertainty and new directions. The opposition aspect means these two planets are fighting it out for domination, there is a feeling inside of wanting to hang on the our security but also another feeling of wanting to break free.
By the end of these oppositions, we will choose one or the other, or find a compromise between the two. A lot will depend on how these oppositions aspect planets in your chart, but all of us will feel the tension of this difficult aspect. On the positive side, these oppositions do make things happen and the best way to approach them is to weigh up the pros and cons of both sides. Look for the best of tradition, the stable things in your life that are working, and also reach for the new opportunities that present themselves in your life that will somehow fit in to the existing structures you want to keep.
Famous People with Saturn Opposite Uranus
To get an idea of how Saturn opposite Uranus works at the personal level, we can look at famous people who have this aspect in their chart. By only looking at people very tight aspects, we can be fairly sure that this aspect is a major influence in their lives.
Louis XIII King of France (01′) lost his father to assassination when he was 8 years old and his mother, Marie de’ Medici ruled France as regent. >He and his mother were continually at cross-purposes and at odds. Marie tried to keep things running as her husband had done, representing Saturn. A rebellion by the Huguenots was growing in France and Louis was convinced to break with his mother and take their side, representing Uranus. After 6 years Louis and his mother reconciled, he found compromise between Saturn and Uranus. In the end Louis found a balance between monarchists and rebels, between Catholics and Protestant. Even in his relationships, though often unhappy, there was some resolution. His arranged marriage with Anne of Austia was difficult. She had four miscarriages but eventually bore him a son to keep the royal line going. It was termed a “divine miracle“.

LA Riots (time.net)
In Los Angeles, Rodney King (11′) came to personify the classic Saturn Uranus oposition theme of tradition versus freedon. Savagely beaten by police who were subsequently aquited of wrongdoing (Saturn establishment). The aquital and the video led to the 1992 LA riots (Uranus rebellion). Robert Downey Jr. (30′) has been fighting a constant battle in his life with drug addiction. He has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder. The struggle between the excitement of drugs (Uranus) and walking the straight and narrow (Saturn). Other include Jean Driscoll (39′) and Charlie Sheen (58′).

Great article, Jamie. With Sun at 29+ Virgo, I feel like a lightning rod for this opposition. Right now my personal challenge is to reorder many things in my self and life (Saturn)–to put them on better foundations. I’m trying to do it without becoming immobilized by fear (negative Saturn), especially regarding financial issues that I share with the collective at this time. Fold in: I am attempting to use my considerable creativity and inventiveness (Uranus) to find solutions to cash flow and other personal changes I want to make.
Luckily, my specialty as an astrologer is Chiron–the “bridge” between these two planets. At its worst moments, when the opposition has me feeling drawn and quartered, I see very clearly that focusing on healing the places I’m stuck (the old Chironic wound) is the key to unlocking the opposition and all my other dilemmas.
Thanks for giving me the chance to articulate this.
Joyce I’m so glad you did articulate yourself and so very well. I also have Sun 28vir09 and Uranus 29vir31. I understand exactly what you said. I have some fear and aprehension about this transit. I feel it’s like a crossroads for me. I am wanting to break free of restrictions but also want to be a stable influence for my family.
Marina is currently visiting me in Australia but has to go back to London 2 day before this opposition. Our dream is to live together permanently, so like you, we are working on giving our astrology business a solid foundation to finance our long distance relationship (air fares for us and the kids). Uranus inovation is ceratinly required.
Thanks for pointing out Chiron the astrologer, I also believe that but hadn’t thought of it in relations to this aspect. Great feedback!
I came to know about this transit just a couple of weeks ago, when I turned to my astrology ‘books’ in desperation after yet another setback and the feeling of powerlesness and frustration that goes with it. I am born with sun mars jupiter conjunct asc libra. Now that I understand what is happening, I feel somewhat more relaxed as I have decided to just lie low until this transit has passed. Looking at what has been happening to me since say february, it is best not to make any grand plans or even think ahead, nor book a holiday. It has been tiring indeed starting and stopping, wanting and not being able to at the same time. And this in my case goes for relationships too. With all of my personal planets in the first 3 houses, there is lots more to be expected I guess, so I just have to brace myself
Recently diagnosed with fibromyalgy I now sleep a lot or sit behind my computer screen, getting sore eyes and putting on weight. On a positive note this transit seems to make me more caring and tolerant towards others and bring me more wisdom. It also forces me to go for quality instead of quantity, as it knocks me back when I am on the wrong track! So my personal slogan for this transit has become: “IN LIMITATION YOU MEET THE MASTER” Thanks for reading this rather long comment and thank you for this amazing site. love to you all. Liane
Nice article Jamie. Looking at it in natal charts is a great illustrtion of how this aspect plays out.
The fourth opposition is right on my Mercury, the previous three took aim at my Pluto, Uranus and Sun/Saturn/Chiron. The last one is clear of my Virgo/Pisces planets so I hope to be able to enjoy that one!
This is hiting a lot of mundane charts, particularly Greece. I did a short article on that on my site.

It’s building into the “Cardinal Explosion” of June and July, kind of like tenderising the steak before you cook it…
Hey Jamie!!! Great article!!! Uranus’s 7 year cycle is actually what got me interested in astrology, just a few months ago….so I’m just a baby beginning to learn about how everything works;-) I’m LOVING it though!!!
I’m VERY excited for Uranus to leave Pisces and finally give me some relief from the “hell” that has been my life for the last 7 years (I’m being a little dramatic…I’ve definitely learned an insane amount about myself, the world and my interaction within it;-), but am also kind of nervous for the opposition to Saturn…..I don’t think I have any hard aspects to it, but if I’ve learned anything, it’s that Uranus can knock you on your bum no matter where it is in relation to your natal planets!!!
Hi Claire, you certainly have some great in-depth analysis on your blog. Looking forward to your updates on the UK election especially. Since you wrote this, Poland has had their “Explosion”. I’m glad you are so up to date with the mundane work because it looks like it’s going to be a busy time from now on.
Perfect! You can write as much as you like because the personal effects are the most important for us to learn from, and we don’t get that detail by reading about celebrities. Thanks for sharing
This ties into what Joyce was saying about Chiron bridging the Saturn Uranus opposition. I wonder which was the “catalyst” for you? http://the-cat-alyst.blogspot.com/
Hi, Jamie. Your listing above really got me thinking. My grandson was born at the first Opposition, a difficult birth which I attended in London. I was also here in London taking care of him during the third opposition, and now I’m here with him for the fourth one. He’s coming to the States this summer when I’ll be with him for the fifth one! This fourth one exactly squares my Ascendant/Moon conjunction from the 4th/10th house. I don’t really understand the pattern yet as I just noticed it when I read the listing above. But I thought it is one of those “coincidences” that must be more than that.
Hi again Ellen, your grandson is fortunate to have you around, and congratulations
I have to admit that I have had some very positive things happen to me on these oppositions! On 4th November 08 a friend I had a falling out with earlier in the year came back into my life! Again, the February and September 09 oppositions brought me good news! I’m a Virgo!
Clara
It took me longer than it should have to realize that while Sat was square to my sun at 29.45 of Sag…………and that Uranus was also square!….they must be in opposition…dahhhh
No wonder the last 20 months or so have been a challenge.

A few things in the news that relate to this opposition:
*Catholic sex scandal: Saturn the rigid consevative structure of the Church being confronted by Uranus rebellion and change.
*Icelnad volcano. Saturn delays and restrictions from Uranus unexpected, explosion, air travel.
*UK election debates. The Liberal Democrats doing well as the middle ground compromise between Saturn conservatives and Uranus Labor.
*Oil rig explosion in the US. saturn the oil rig structure, Uranus the explosion.
Neptune quincunx Saturn in all of this, adds religion for the Church scandal, and water for the volcano and water and oil for the rig explosion.
I’ve added a link to Claire’s Greece article about the news today of asked the EU to bail them out.
Just to say the feeling of wanting to fly away, escape was checked by saturn which was ready to release, to revolve, or evolve or update one’s sense of responsibility for one’s child. Letting go. Laud not the power of the mind and free choice until you are safely on the other side of the moment is my new thought. NOW the matured adults. Two women embracing.
The beginning of this transition was 1987, the conjunction.
There was still a ways to go at that time. Chiron is in my 5th house Virgo. 11 degrees. Great group of people here. Seems different than most of my familiar sites. cj
Seems to me I read somewhere Uranus was also sitting on the part of imprisonment or conjunct it. Probably Solar Fire Deluxe. Interesting reading. The Scheat.
